Banibrata Mukhopadhyay's Home Page

This is my web-home under construction (may be forever!).

I am a faculty member (with the designation Professor) in the Department of Physics , Indian Institute of Science . Before I joined here, I was in Harvard University . Prior to that I spent my time in various Institutes/Universities in India (SINP, SNBNCBS, PRL, IUCAA) and abroad (University of Palermo, Italy, University of Oulu, Finland) as a short term or a long term researcher.

I am a Theoretical Physicist working on various topics of Physics, Astrophysics, Cosmology, General Relativity, Astroparticle Physics and their interface. I also have significant interest in Astronomy (observation) and Data Analysis.

Some of my specific research interest consists of:

1) Theoretical Astrophysics of black holes, white dwarfs and neutron stars:
  (a) Origin of massive white dwarfs and neutron stars, violation of Chandrasekhar-limit and underlying supernoave.
  (b) Variability of compact objects, Quasi-Periodic-Oscillation phenomena etc.
  (c) Measuring spin of black holes.
  (d) Nuclear astrophysics including nucleosynthesis in accretion disks around compact objects and supernovae, nuclear matter in high density and strong magnetic fields, thermonuclear burst on accreting neutron stars.
  (e) Behavior of matter in various curved geometries and matter flow and corresponding inertial forces around compact objects.
  (f) Possible modifications to Einstein's gravity and their application to resolve observed astrophysical problems.

2) Astrophysical fluids:
  (a) Hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic phenomena including accretion disks and jets around compact objects.
  (b) Origin of turbulence in astrophysical flows and certain similar shear flows in laboratory.

3) Particle Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravity:
  (a) Field theory in curved space-time, early universe, baryogenesis, neutrino physics.
  (b) Investigation of the spinor, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in curved space-time.

Here is my list of publications.

Here is the Book published by Springer I have edited (along with Sudipta Sasmal of ICSP, Kolkata).

Our work in News

I serve as an editor (along with Tejinder P. Singh of TIFR, Mumbai) for a Special Section of Current Science dedicated to 100 Years of General relativity.

We organize (myself as a Convener) a conference on Accretion Processes Around Compact Objects at IISc in July 14-16, 2010.

We organize (myself as a Convener) A One-Day Symposium on Galaxies to celebrate Prof. Chanda J. Jog's 60th Birth Anniversary at IISc on November 29, 2014.

We organize (myself as One of the Conveners) a conference Exploring the Universe: Near Earth Space Science to Extra-Galactic Astronomy at S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, in November 14-17, 2018.

I am overwhelmed due to the conference International Symposium on Recent Developments in Relativistic Astrophysics: Celebrating 50 Stellar Years of Banibrata Mukhopadhyay at S. R. M. University, Gangtok, Sikkim in December 11-13, 2023.
